Daily Conversations - I

"Harry are you a baby?"

"No. Girl."

"Oh. Are you a big girl?"

"No. Little girl." emphasis on little

-------------------

"Work!" as she walks away from me.

"Are you going to work Harry?"

"Yep." still walking away slowly with a big grin on her face.

"Oh Harry, NO! No, don't go to work!" I fall around pleading for her to stay.

"Home." She says turning around. I clap my hands. She grins and gives me a big hug.

------------

"Where did you get that balloon Harry?"

"Lady. Shop." holds out arm "Arm". This is where the lady tied the balloon to her.

-----------

"We can't fix that Harry, it's broken."

"Mama" (if talking to Papa) "Papa" (if talking to Mama)

"No, (other parent) can't fix it either."

"Nanagrandpa"

"Can they fix it?"

"Yep."

------------

"Scrape!" points to her right knee

"How did you get that one Harry?"

"Stroller" (she was out pushing the stroller at night and fell over flat on her face quite hard actually)

points to her left knee "Scrape!"

"How did you get that one Harry?"

"Nanagrandpa" (apparently from doing some swinging)

-----------

Out speaking to the next door neighbours:

"Hi, blah blah blah" (from me)

*insert polite conversation here*

"Ok Harry, do you want to say bye now?"

"Byeee!" waves hand

"She loves to talk doesn't she? I can hear her over the fence" - from next door neighbour

"Errmmm, yes she does!" - blushes from me

-------------

"Do you want to use the potty?"

"Poo! Wee! Potty!" sits on the potty

"Do you want me to take your pants off?"

"Yes." pants come off

"Would you like your nappy off too? To do your poos like the girl in the book?"

"Yes." nappy comes off. Harry sits on the potty.

"Do you need to do a poo Harry?"

"Nope." just sits there on the potty reading her book about the potty

---------------

"We're going to go to the shops Harry."

"Car! Around! Money!" (there is a blasted Wiggles ride-on thing at the bottom of the travelator)

"We can go on the car Harry. Then we'll go to the shop."

"Shop. Trolley. Lady. Pay."

----------------

repeat. sleep. repeat.

Playgroup

Ok just had to tell this little story. We were just at playgroup and there was a girl a little older than Harry standing off to the side crying. Of course Harry was very disturbed by this. Suddenly she said "Doll. Basket." and pointe dup to the doll sitting in a basket above my head. I got it down for her and she pulled me over to the girl who was crying. She gave the doll to the girl, stroked her arm and said "Happy?". The little girl was still a bit sad but definitely not crying now. I siad "Look, that doll has a bellybutton. Oooohh, and so do I!" and showed her my bellybutton. That made her smile a little and then Harry got in on the act and showed her her bellybutton as well. The mama and the girl were both smiling by this stage. So was I. She is so sweet.

Gentle

Poor Harry has been sick, sick, sick this week. During the day she's actually not too bad, with just a very runny nose and the occasional cough. But come night time, this poor baby has the croupiest sounding cough, loud enough to rattle the walls. This has, unfotunately, coincided with the weather being particularly cold at night. Since she rolls so much that you can't guarantee a blanket will stay over her, she's not always assured of a nice snuggly night's sleep no matter what tricks I try to pull. So about five minutes ago we pulled the heater into her room..leaving us out here shivering. Brrrr! Time to invest in more heaters methinks.

Harriet has gone all intellectual. And it's not just the glasses. She counts "One, two" all the time. She *loves* to count (kinda like The Count). Just today we've started to introduce 'three'. We're not big on the whole rabbiting off one through to twenty, we'd prefer her to actually know what the numbers are and proceed in that fashion. Seems to be working, because she can add and subtract one and two quite easily now - the introduction of three will be interesting! Well, interesting for us maybe and not so interesting for those of you reading this blog. "Three?!" I hear you exclaim? "Who the hell cares?" Well, when you spend all of your days repeating over and over "Park? Did you go to the park Harry? And did you go on the swing?" and other fascinating pieces of minutae from the life of a toddler, then I defy you to not see the fascination in something like three.

Her latest focus is Cooper. On Sunday we're going to Cooper's first birthday, and I was explaining to Harry that Cooper is having a birthday and he's turning one. I was in the middle of doing something in the kitchen when I turned around and there she was pulling at my trousers with her hat on, her bag under her arm and she said "Party". Ha! I asked "What party?" and of course came the reply "Coo-pah. Pah-teee." Monkey, I never mentioned the party! But we went to the toy store to buy his present and I also bought Harry a couple of little things. In this photo you can see one of her presents. A shopping basket full of plastic fruit held together by velcro. You use the little knife to 'cut' the fruit/vegetable in half (or thirds, as you can see by the cucumber in this shot). As Harriet says, she's off to do some "cuh-teen". It takes a little while each time she goes off to do it for her to remember to keep one hand on the 'food and the other on the knife. The first few cuts send one piece flying off in a dangerous projectile manner across the playroom, but once you gently remind her a couple of times she gets it going again. I first saw these at the Montessori school, but they were a lovely wooden variety. However they were obviously a huge hit with Harriet and she happily spent time doing the "cuh-teen" at the school, which was what drew me to them in the store.

She also knows her 'right' hand now. Ask her to show you her right hand and she'll do so (just like she'll show you 'doo' [two] fingers). But ask her to show her left hand and you're met with a bit of a confused look and a pause, followed by a hesitant flash of the right hand again. Did I mention she's cute?

What other stuff is she up to? I think one of the best parts of Harriet at the moment is coming to realise just 'who' Harry is. Her personality has always been pretty strong, but surprisingly she is actually very gentle. In fact I hadn't ascribed the term to her but a friend did one morning when we were out and I was surprised I had never thought of it before. Because she is very gentle. To have nearly reached two years and not ever pushed or grabbed or bitten or struck out at another child or adult or ever thrown an object is, I think, pretty unusual. She has certainly had those things done to her, so it's not as if she hasn't had reason for retaliation in kind, but she never has. I know that will change and she will hardly be this angelic for long, but I am very surprised that a child of mine is so incredibly gentle. Mind you, I never said calm. She is definitely NOT calm!

Title of this photo - When Good Hair Goes Bad. Frizz Attack! If there's one thing Harriet loathes, it's having her hair touched. Brushed, washed, wet, dry, you name it, she hates it. Although she does stand completely still for the placement of a clip in her hair because she realises the benefit to her (ie: no hair in her eyes). But getting that hair washed is an Olympic event. Now that she's fragile with the cold I haven't pushed it (hey who am I kidding, I never push it, I am so slowly slowly catch a monkey with the hair that I feel fully trained as a monkey wrangler) but when I let it go, this is the result. So I am sure you can understand why some days I have visions of DOCS finding me for indignities performed on a child's scalp.

This weekend we met up with Grandpa and Nana and whilst Harry went off for a little trip into the Botanic Gradens, Papa Jimbo and myself went footloose and fancy free across the city of Sydney. Or we went for lightning speed clothes shopping. You be the judge. Or, hey, let my new pants speak for themselves. One thing I knew but didn't really get (iykwim) before having a child was just how I would never be able to go shopping for clothes for the next five years; well six really if you include the pregnancy. Also just how much I would miss reading the newspaper, but hey, my woes are not of concern to all of you I'm sure. Get back to the subject at hand! I was doing a bit of reminiscing about the early days because I went to take some photos of a 2wk old baby as well as finding out that Nadia is having another baby girl in October (Congrats Nads & Tony!). It's amazing how that first year was a complete blur.

Today Harry woke up and I said "Today is Wednesday Harry, what does that mean?" and she jumped up excitedly and proclaimed "Nana!". Although she is not so big on the actual order of days, she definitely knows what happens on each day by name. Here she was having an in-depth conversation with Nana all about what happened on the weekend. At the end of each sentence poor Nana was met with the ubiquitous "More". She says it with such a solemn, flat voice, it's quite funny to hear, because she really just wants to hear more and now!

In other Harriet-related news, her latest love is for this book we got from the library titled 'Spaceboy Spud'. In it, Spud goes off on a rocket to rescue his alien friends from various bedtime routine dilemmas, one of which is helping the 'wee wee aliens' go to the toilet. This child is now obssessed with the wee wee aliens. We read this book, oh, at least three times in one sitting. Funnily enough though, Papa has to read the first half and Mama reads the second half. This is very important and if Papa deigns to read the second half he will be reprimanded and the book thrust into Mama's hands.

Also her latest favourite phrases are "No way!" and today she loved to tell us that she was "Happy!" as well as "inside" being a new fave word.

I love this last photo. It doesn't show her being particularly gorgeous or anything but this is the patient, waiting face she pulls when we have to...well...wait for anything. Here she is waiting for the flying fox. It is just such a Harry face...*sigh*. She's just a great kid. How on earth did I get this lucky?

Tell Me A Story

Ok, so apart from being a 1927 song, the title of this post is all about Harriet's favourite pasttime. She will bring up things that have happened and want to discuss them over and over again. The latest example is from when she went to Nell's second birthday party a couple of weeks ago. Nell received a funky abacus; well that abacus not only looked great to Nell, but also to Harry. So she apparently (I wasn't there) leant across the table and strained for the abacus. James told her "No, that abacus belongs to Nell and she just received it as a present for her birthday." And she took that without a problem.

HOWEVER...she has relived it almost exactly, with the hand reaching across and everything, even now that we're two weeks from when it happened. She seems to have a pretty impressive memory for events for a toddler actually, recalling and describing things in great detail. She loves to talk about who she saw at which place, and remembers the name of children that we just meet once off in the park and brings them up much later. But the constant repetition can get pretty tiring to say the least!

Well for this Mother's Day I got very spoilt and received a sewing machine! Yay! I have been itching to learn how to sew for quite a while and now I can give it a good go. My first attempt at sewing was a little bag for Harry - absolutely hopeless in terms of skill but loads of fun and pretty cute too. I'm heading off to Spotlight tomorrow armed with a list of things to buy. Hopefully soon you'll see Harriet sporting some funky threads.

Speechwise she is going from strength to strength, talking non-stop (hmmm...where does she get that trait from?). And we had a breakthrough last night - she finally said her name! She walks around saying 'playgroup' and 'delicate' and all sorts of complicated words, but for some reason her name was a bit of a stumbling block. She's so cute when she says it too! She says her full name, not just Harry (even though that is what we call her 90% of the time) and it is very clear. Finally!

Sah-wee

This is a storyboard of Harriet enjoying herself on the flying fox in the playground near us. This one is known as the 'BIG' park and she loves to go there, almost especially to go on this thing. It's pretty cool, Papa and Mama love going on it too! But just not that long ago she was unable to hold on for herself and now look at her going for it solo, she is so cool.

Last week poor Harry had an horrendous snot situation. The cute thing was that she learnt how to blow her nose on her own - the not so cute thing was what we had to go through to get to that stage! Ewww...snot *everywhere*. But she actually quite likes to blow her nose, so that was a relief given that she really REALLY needed to do it. Thank goodness for Vicks baby balsam.

So although we were invited to a birthday party on Saturday we erred on the side of caution and decided not to expose everyone to her lurgy. Instead, we went out for breakfast and then on the way home we found that the local primary school was having a fair day! It was pretty cool, and best of all for Harriet - a bouncy castle! So we dutifully lined up to get in and she was SO excited....and then proceeded to lie down on the castle while all the other kids went totally ballistic jumping around next to her! Check out this pose would you!

She also went on this ride that had swings that turned on the motorised canopy. I'm sure there's a proper word for it but hey, you get what I mean, right? This was classic - she got on and we were a bit hesitant because she was definitely the youngest one going on it (but definitely not the smallest) and it did go pretty fast. Each time she whirled past us she had this look of grim determination on her face, but it's the same look she gets when she's on the swings. You really wouldn't know that she is actually enjoying herself, but she is because as soon as she stopped she was asking for "More!". But the line to get tickets was a tad ridiculous by this stage so we wandered off to investigate other aspects fo the fair.

We bought our usual library of books for about $10 and a Fisher Price swing to hangin the apricot tree in our backyard. Only problem is that it's just sitting out there on the lawn and Harry keeps asking "Swing?".

Another cute thing she's doing lately is saying "Look". So I tell her she can't touch something (especially the cat food) and she say "No. Look." and she then crouches down with her hands clasped between her knees and just looks at it! Today she said 'playgroup' too and was so excited about actually going to playgroup that each time she said it she burst out in spontaneous applause and "Yay!"s as well.

Oh and in more news on our 'modelling manners' rather than requesting them, Harry has also started on the "Sah-wee". I was walking to the table and she got underfoot and I kind of tripped a bit in my attempt to walk around her at the last minute. She looked up at me and said "Sah wee". Awwwww.

Edit: I thought about how inane this post is but I just rummaged it up during a day sleep today. I forgot whole bunches of stuff, like how Harriet loves to pole dance and how she will 'assign' you a pole to dance with whilst she does. And how she has been playing on her own for ages - the other day Jan and I had a full conversation while Harry played with her 'Man' in the 'whizzy dizzy' (read: Figurine from her campervan sits in one of her stacking cups and gets thrown around in it. Then when he gets out he can't walk straight because he's dizzy so she throws him around a little). She also loves her campervan that we got her for Christmas a lot. A lot! And funnily enough she won't let the girl drive it, she is very insistent that only the man can get behind the wheel - really striking a blow for feminism there.

And she has been eating heaps more than she has in the past. And...ummm...lots of stuff. Like, how she loves me to change the words of 'Miss Polly' to something silly - "The doctor came with his car and his cat" for example. And then she gets all giggly. And just generally lately she has developed a real little sense of the absurd. She has also started to get scared of things. When we were in the book store the other night the final page of a pop-up book had the big jaws of a crocodile replete with teeth chomping down out of the page. Scared the freaking bejesus out of her and she nearly burst into tears. And how now when we go out it is like I go out with her and we do stuff together; rather than just me and my baby it is me and my daughter. So cool. And she has loved this dress that we bought from Clair so much that she has insisted on wearing it over her normal clothes, despite it making climbing that bit more difficult. Well, it makes twirling a lot more fun so I guess that helps!
Ok, that's enough of an edit. I think I've covered more stuff now. I can go to bed happy and tha tis just what I shall do right now. Goodnight!

ThankYou

If you don't already know (well you may have guessed it anyway) we don't believe in making Harriet say "Thank you" or "Please" or "Sorry". We believe that modelling is a much better example; in addition it ensures that she never says anything without sincerity - each and every time she says those things I want her to actually mean it. So to that end we have never asked her to say it, never mentioned it as something to say and never pointed it out to her.
WELL......
This morning I was handing her a piece of toast. I put it in front of her and she very clearly looked at me and said "Thank you!". I nearly *died*! I was so happy! How awesome that she said it to me because she wanted to and I know that, rather than because she felt she had to. I was so happy from that thank you it still makes me smile!

Tadpoles, Seedlings and Tired

This post would have been written a lot earlier this week except for the fact that Harriet has decided that sleep is for the weak. She has resumed her midnight wakings and plays and had no day sleeps for two days. Luckily she had one today so I had a little reprieve. actually I had a big one because Jan came down to see Miss Harry and I got a luxurious baby-free lunch. But the blog is about Harriet not me, so back to the task at hand.

On the weekend we had some tadpoles as I mentioned in the last post. This was/is pretty exciting! We went out for a trip to buy some gravel and water 'aging' solution and proceeded to have a very domestic Saturday afternoon. Firstly we got the pebbles in the container for the tadpoles and washed it out a few times. Harry loved getting sleeves up and right into 'slooshing' the water all through the rocks and cleaning them out. Only thing was that she didn't like how the little pebbles stuck to her hand afterwards.

Erm, yes, you can see her displeasure in this photo. So we created a lovely new home for the tadpoles after reading up on how to care for them on the wonderful resource known as the intertron. They are flourishing so far (fingers crossed!) and love nothing more, it seems, than to sit on the lettuce we've carefully boiled for them until it is just a lignin skeleton. I have to admit that it seems we are rather more fascinated by it than Harriet. Sure she likes to ask "Look!" but I'm still sitting there watching them nibble and float and swim long after she's moved on to Playdough.

Our other big adventure on Saturday was to plant some seeds that the lovely Kelli gave us as a housewarming gift. This involved more pouring, which of course thrilled Harriet. We were all engaged in her favourite activity! So she poured the potting mix into the seedling pots, and Papa and I placed the seeds.

And, can you believe it, brown thumbs that we are, today I noticed lots of gorgeous little sprouts in the lettuce pots! How exciting! You will no doubt be kept up to date with the progress of the plants and I hope to post a photo showing our first salad with the spinach and lettuce leaves in the near future (*cough*ambitious*cough*).

On Sunday morning I had a photo 'shoot' with a friend's ten week old baby (who Harriet is obssessed with!). I was so depressed after the shoot at how hopeless the photos were that I...wait for it...didn't pick up the camera again until Monday afternoon! *shock* I think Harry was so delighted with the reprieve that she hammed it up big time for the camera when I got it out. In this photo she's just finished putting on sunscreen and I announced that we were finished with it. Then she pinched her fingers together and hunched over like this and asked "Little More?". Cheeky monkey!

But despite all of her non-sleeping issues over the past few days, amazingly she is in fine spirits (whilst all around her wilt). She basically just repeats everything that you say, and her previous word count that I posted here is now completely obsolete. Her current word count is probably about double that! She honestly just says everything. Tonight in the bath we were talking about her day and she said very clearly "Nana went park". I was so happy that she used the past tense verb correctly that I almost forgot to be happy that she said a sentence.

She's growing up so quickly! I kind of don't like this photo because she looks a little worldly-wise here and she's not at all. I'm not too sure where this smile came from. But damn she's cute!

Anyway, if you are interested, the parenting discussion is still going on in the 'comments' section of the post below this one called 'Parenting Beliefs'. Thanks so much for all of your comments, it's great to be able to engage in an open discourse about what we think and what we're doing. But really, let's face it, I just love talking about Harriet.
