The Chiropractor

Well, how could I forgot Harriet's most exciting news from the week? We had been noticing for a few weeks now that she isn't turning her head to the right. If you put toys on her right side she won't play with them and she didn't like to turn her neck. I was worried about proprioceptive deficits and after hearing some really positive reports from the girls on EB (see link on the right hand bar of this site) we decided to pack her off to the chiropractor.

Not knowing any chiropractors, anyone in Perth NOR that's been to one or ever having been to one myself, I had no idea of where to start looking for one. What the hell do you look for / ask about? Thank god for the Yellow Pages. I know it sounds like a totally dodgy way to find a practitioner for any kind of problem but I saw that there was a clinic in Leederville, which is a suburb relatively close to where we live. They had a website and when I looked it over I really liked the photo of the guy on it. This sounds strange but I just didn't want to take Harriet along to a clinic where the chiropractor came out to get us and I just didn't like the look of him/her and wouldn't trust them touching Harriet.

Luckily Lee was as lovely and gentle in real life as his photo suggested on the site. The clinic is very pretty and funky and Lee demonstrated on my wrist just what Harry would be feeling whilst he did an 'adjustment'. For those of you who, like me, had never been to a chiropractor before, what they do is gently (or forcibly, depending on your age and severity of the problem) apply blunt but focussed force onto the lateral process of the spine. He had a feel of Harriet's neck and said she had a lateral deviation at C2. He then demonstrated this by touching her gently in just a way on her neck that made her shy away - poor baby! He laid her down and made the adjustment - we had one session on Wednesday morning and another one today (Friday morning). She needs another one in 10days adn then she's right as rain. Apparently the best times to get babies adjusted are at birth, when they learn to sit and then when they learn to walk. During the whole thing she was lying there on the table looking up at Lee smiling and cooing away. He said today that if she carries on like this then she's going to have men wrapped around her finger!

Then yesterday when she wouldn't sleep during the day, no matter what I tried, I decided that we may as well have a little photo session. So she laid outside on her deliciously gorgeous blanket that Aunty Jennie made for her and snapped away. She has a great drool bubble collection in this close up photo - if you click on this and see it enlarged you can really appreciate the drool collection going on there.

In this photo though Jimbo reckons she looks like an alien. Charming! Well...she does look a little funny. I have a gorgeous photo of her close up but there's a blasted fly sitting on her arm! Is there anyone out there who will volunteer to photoshop the fly out of the picture for me? Go on, airbrushing babies is what this century is all about.

Wow, I don't know if I'd have been brave enough to let a chiropractor near my baby even though one of my friends who I completely trust is a chiropractor who does exactly the same thing with babies and young children (in Sydney somewhere) and swears by it. I especially would've freaked out if he'd told me he needed to adjust C2 but that's the anatomist in me (knowing that the nerve that controls the diaphragm and therefore breathing comes from C3-C5) I'm really glad it all worked out though, I'm sure it's made a big difference. My chiropractor friend said she's been amazed to see changes in babies/kids after one or two sessions and that parents are recommending her to all their friends. She's never been so busy in her life.

I used to see a chiropractor when I was about 13 or 14. I have a bad neck which gives me migraines and my Dad thought it'd be a good idea to be seen by this local chiropractor who lived and practiced down the road. To be honest, other than feeling good for the first 20 minutes after the session, it really didn't help me at all. That feeling though when they place their fingers in a certain spot and roll you over using their body weight and you feel your entire vertebral column pop, one vertebrae at at time, is amazing. The tension we store in our bodies is incredible and I'm sure Harriet felt 100% better because of it.

By the way, she doesn't look like an alien - she's got the pouty pose down and everything - she's a supine baby supermodel. :)

Hey Guys

Jennie do you have a chiro in Sydney? Or are you talking about the US?

And ZedP - This guy doesn't manipulate the back at all, he just has this little metal 'pen' that has a blunt end. He clicks that against the spinal process and checks her movement afterwards and that's it. Only takes a few minutes. And yeah, I was worried too when he said C2 but it has been great seeing the difference in her - she is using her right hand more and is looking to the right all the time now.
